Reel Cowboys of the Santa Susanas -- Johnny Mack Brown

'Reel Cowboys of the Santa Susanas' is a continuing series about "six-gun heroes that performed on movie location ranches in Chatsworth, California.  For more information about Chatsworth filming locations see http://www.cowboyup.com/ to find information about my books: Rendezvous at Boulder Pass: Hollywood's Fantasyland - 2010 and Reel Cowboys of the Santa Susanas - 2008.

Johnny Mack Brown (JMB) (1904-1974) was a B-Western star who was discovered because he had been a college football star.  He earned a football scholarship to the University of Alabama, and in 1926, his "Crimson Tide" team earned a trip to the Rose Bowl Game.  He was voted MVP of the game after scoring two of his team's three touchdowns in an upset win over the favored Washington Huskies.

His appearance on Wheaties cereal boxes in 1927, brought an offer for motion picture screen tests that resulted in winning a role opposite Mary Pickford in her first talkie, Coquette (1929), for which won her an Oscar.

In 1930 he was cast as the star in a Western entitled Billy the Kid directed by King Vidor.  After 1930 JMB went on to make many first class movies, and eventually became one of the screen's top B-movie cowboy stars, making 127 western films during his career.

When the B-Western genre faded in box office popularity, Johnny Mack Brown went into retirement in 1953, but returned later to appear in support roles in a few Western films and television shows.
