Movie serials (or chapter plays) were popular from the late 1930s though the 1950s. Republic was the most prolific serial producer to film outdoor scenes on the Iverson Movie Ranch, but Columbia wasn't far behind.
Serials generally included adventure genre (especially jungle stories like The Perils of Nyoka (1942); Western genre (like The Miracle Rider (1935), starring Tom Mix); crime genre (like The Crimson Ghost (1946) starring Charles Quigley, Linda Stirling and Clayton Moore), and science fiction genre which often featured comic book superheroes.
In fact, the first movie appearance of both Superman and Batman were Republic serials with outdoor scenes lensed on the Iverson Movie Ranch. Incidentally 'Boulder Pass' is my name for the Santa Susana Pass in Chatsworth.

Captain Video was a great serial in it's day. I didn't miss an episode. There were no women in it which pleased most boys.
