Ray “Crash” Corrigan (1902 - 1976) was an American actor and B-Western cowboy star. His career in Hollywood began as a physical fitness instructor to the stars in the early 1930s. He soon found work as a stuntman and acting bit-parts. One of his earliest roles was in Tarzan and His Mate (1934) in which he wore a Gorilla costume.
In 1936 he got his break with a lead role in Republic's serial Undersea Kingdom. Working for Republic between 1936 and 1938 he starred in 20 'Three Mesquiteers' B-Westerns films, but he left Republic in 1938 over a pay dispute.
In 1937, Corrigan purchased approximately 1,500 acres in Santa Susana (now Simi Valley) about 6 miles west of Chatsworth. He later purchased more land until the total acreage of his ranch (which he called 'Corriganville') was 1,611 acres. I'll write more about Corriganville and its role as a filming location in a future post. The photo above was taken about 1960 on the Western street dubbed Silvertown in Corriganville.
After leaving Republic Corrigan signed with Monogram Pictures, and starred in 20 low budget 'Range Busters' films between 1940 and 1943.
