Reel Cowboys of the Santa Susanas -- Roy Rogers

Roy Rogers #1 Reel Cowboy of the Santa Susanas

Roy Rogers (1911 – 1998)(nicknamed "King of the Cowboys"), was an American singer and B-Western cowboy star.  In 1934 he formed a musical group group with Bob Nolan called Sons of the Pioneers--their songs included "Cool Water" and "Tumbling Tumbleweeds."

In 1936 he played bit part as a bandit in Gene Autry's in The Old Corral (1936)(lobby photo above).  He won his first starring role in 1938, in Under Western Stars (1938).  During the next two decades he went on to star in nearly one hundred movies.

In 1951, he broke into television with the "The Roy Rogers Show" starring Roy Rogers, Dale Evans (his wife), Trigger (his golden palomino) and Bullet (his German Shepherd dog).  Together they were featured in more than 100 episodes on NBC from October 1951 through 1957 and on CBS from 1961 to September 1964.

Dale Evans was known as "The Queen of the West."

  1. Roy's "Bells of Coronado" is a favorite of mine. It looks like dams at two different lakes were used, do you know of the locations?
    Thanks,
    Steve

  2. I haven't seen "Bells of Coronado" for many moons. It was not filmed in Chatsworth, so it's not one I've spent anytime researching. Try looking it up in the Internet Movie database (Imdb). Good luck.
