Because of its interesting sandstone rock formations, Burro Flats was a popular filming location between 1937 and 1954. Then in the mid-1950s, filming abruptly stopped when Rocketdyne began using the (then remote) area to test rocket engines and power systems.
Today the Burro Flats location is known as the Santa Susana Field Laboratory (SSFL). It is closed to the public. In 1959, an experimental nuclear reactor at SSFL suffered a partial core meltdown -- the first meltdown in the history of nuclear power. It resulted in a significant release of radiation. Long-term effects and mitigation efforts have been the subject of on-going controversy.
